History is an inspiring and engaging subject that helps children understand the world they live in and the people who came before them. Our aim is to provide all pupils with a progressive history curriculum that equips them with the knowledge, understanding and historical skills needed to explore the past and make sense of the present.

History is taught through key historical concepts such as chronology, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and historical interpretation. Through enquiry-based learning, discussion and the use of a wide range of sources, all children are supported to feel they belong in the history classroom, where their questions, ideas and perspectives are valued.

Throughout their time at Waltham Leas, pupils are taught a clear progression of historical skills, including analysing sources, forming interpretations, and communicating their understanding in different ways. New knowledge and skills are built upon year on year, which empower children to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and develop their own informed views about the past. Learning is placed within a range of historical contexts and, where possible, linked to the local history of Waltham to deepen relevance and engagement.

All pupils at Waltham Leas are given opportunities to explore the past creatively and imaginatively, enabling them to grow in confidence, curiosity and understanding. By the time they leave primary school, children will have developed a strong historical foundation and a love of learning that prepares them well for history at key stage 3 and beyond.`
