PSHE

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education at Waltham Leas Primary Academy is designed to develop the whole child and to ensure every pupil feels that they belong. Our curriculum equips children with a secure understanding of risk, alongside the knowledge and skills needed to make safe, informed decisions. Lessons are carefully tailored to the needs of our pupils, recognising their age, ability and readiness, so that learning is meaningful, inclusive and relevant to their lives.

In response to the ever-growing pressures faced by young people, we empower children by nurturing their emotional development and supporting their wellbeing. PSHE lessons provide a safe and supportive environment where children are encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts and develop confidence in expressing themselves. Through open discussion and reflection, pupils learn to understand themselves and others, building resilience and positive relationships.

Our PSHE curriculum supports children to grow spiritually, morally, socially, culturally, mentally and physically, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. At Waltham Leas Primary Academy, we value and promote the needs and interests of all pupils, regardless of gender, culture or background, ensuring every child is respected, included and supported to thrive both now and in the future.

RSE

The RSE curriculum at Waltham Leas Primary Academy helps children to belong by placing relationships, respect, and inclusion at the heart of school life. It sits within the PSHE curriculum and reflects the values set out in Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (2019). Through the Medway RSE Scheme, children learn about trust, commitment, love, and respect, as well as respect for their own bodies and for the diversity of religion, culture, and sexual orientation. This approach fosters a strong sense of belonging within families, school, and the wider community.

The RSE curriculum empowers children with the knowledge and understanding they need to make responsible choices. Children learn about their responsibilities to others, the importance of self-control, and an age-appropriate awareness of the consequences of sexual activity. Teaching takes place within the context of marriage, long-term relationships, and family life, and is reinforced through links with the Computing and PE curriculums, termly school values, and wellbeing provision. Together, these help children develop healthy boundaries, confidence, and personal responsibility.

It enables children to grow into confident, respectful, and resilient individuals as part of a wider social, personal, spiritual, and moral education. By the time children leave Waltham Leas Primary Academy, they are equipped with the skills, values, and understanding needed to build positive relationships, look after their physical and emotional wellbeing, and contribute positively to society.
