Sports Premium Funding - September 2017 update

As part of the Olympic 2012 legacy, the Government have committed to give each school funding.  Sports Funding to be received during Academic Year 2017/18 will be doubled.  In the case of Waltham Leas Primary Academy, this will increase from almost £10,000 to £20,000.

Our current, extensive Sports provision means that our children already have access to such elements as

  • Weekly PE lessons delivered by professional coaches.
  • Engagement in a programme of Sports Festivals
  • Subsequent events for identified more able pupils
  • A range of Out of School sports coaching, events and clubs
  • Coaching sessions delivered by local Sports Clubs
  • Opportunities to take part in competitive events
  • Some of the funding will ensure that we are able to continue to offer this impressive range of activity.

We will also be looking to improve and extend the offer to the pupils, initially considering

  • Further coaching provision
  • Improving the quality and quantity of our Sports resources
  • Widen the range of agencies / providers that we engage with

During the financial year September 2014 to August 2015, we received £9765 in Sports Premium Funding.

IMPACT

Sports Festivals

  • These are totally funded by the Sports Premium Funding and are held regularly throughout the year. They increase Sports participation and encourage inclusion – ALL pupils take part.
  • The Festivals help children to meet other children from other schools and helps with their social development – new friends are made through sports participation.
  • The Festivals are often held at the Secondary Schools which our pupils transfer to – which aids smooth transition in that they already feel comfortable with their surroundings.
  • Our Teachers often umpire games and can identify Gifted and Talented pupils – teachers can then also signpost these G & T pupils to Clubs where they can develop their skills further. This also helps with teachers’ continued professional development.
  • The funding has also enabled G & T sessions to be held with increased challenge of coaching – these give exit routes to other clubs such as Athletics, etc. in the local community.

Competitions/Tournaments

  • The impact of the funding has enabled pupils to show off their talents to other pupils through inter-school Competitions and Tournaments.
  • The pupils can mix with pupils of the same sports ability level from other schools

Lunchtime Sports Leaders Programme

  • Pupils are invited to apply for ‘jobs’ as Lunchtime Sports Leaders – Posters advertise the vacancies and they complete application forms and are interviewed.
  • Funding has been used to buy new Sports equipment including mats to enable the pupils to engage in Sports with other pupils. The impact has been that the Year 6 pupils have become role models for younger children - this has great impact on whole school cohesion.
  • The funding has also been used to put in place a Rewards System. Each Lunchtime Sports Leader ‘works’ one lunchtime per week.

Before and after School Clubs

  • Through the many before and after school clubs here at Waltham Leas, we feel the impact has been massively increased sports participation and is open to everyone.
  • Children do not have to be an expert in these Sports but can have the chance to take part and increase their self confidence.

During the financial year September 2014 to August 2015, we have spent:

  • Solar Sports £15,980 covering PPA time and lunches

Swimming competence

During 2018, we will increase our pupils' participation in swimming instruction in order to help them towards their goal of swimming at least 25 metres.  There is a document attached, which shows how many of our current Year 6 pupils have already reached this standard (data taken during their Year 4 statutory swimming programme - due to be updated as and when more pupils reach that level).

To summarise, we feel that the Sports Funding has made a massive impact on the sporting lives of pupils at Waltham Leas Primary Academy.
