Online Safety
As modern day technology is being used more frequently by children both at home and at school, we recognise the importance of educating children from a young age about the dangers of the Internet in the hope that they will remain safe on the Internet whilst they benefit from its many uses.
Here at Waltham Leas we take Online Safety very seriously. We constantly deliver Online Safety based assemblies and lessons to our children to ensure that the rules are always at the forefront of their minds. The Online Safety Rules that we promote are known as the SMART Rules. Please help us to ensure that your child knows the following rules:
S is for safe. Never give your personal information to people that you do not know.
M is for meet. Never arrange to meet with strangers.
A is for Accepting. Never accept emails or messages from people that you do not know as they might contain a virus.
R is for reliable. Not everything that you read on the internet is true.
T is for tell. If anything upsets you on the internet always tell a trusted adult.
Each year we celebrate Safer Internet Day, which takes place in February. This day sees each class carry out an E-Safety based activity. During each Summer term an E-Safety Questionnaire is carried out to ensure that our children have a sound understanding of the rules and how to respond if a situation was to arise.
We elect a new group of E-Safety Champions each year who help to promote E-Safety around the school. It is their job to carry out E-Safety tasks within school. A previous group of E-Safety Champions created an E-Safety film, alongside the Grimsby Institute. We had lots of fun preparing for the film and the filming day was an extremely good experience for all involved. The finished product is fantastic and a credit to both our E-Safety Champions and the Grimsby Institute. The film sees ‘E-Safety Heroes’ travelling down to planet earth and landing at Waltham Leas Academy. The heroes have to deal with a variety of issues that arise during their time at our school to make sure that the children learn from their mistakes and follow the E-Safety rules. We will now be able to use this film within our school to help us promote our E-Safety Rules.
