The Big Wide World
Our theme last year was the Big Wide World.
Each class or year group selected a country or region of the world to study. Customs and traditions were looked at, together with the fauna and flora; food and drink; and the language.
The children were growing plants of the region from supermarket produce. The plants needed to be cultivated inside as they need higher temperatures than the British spring temperature. For example, Year 6 were growing mango plants from Tesco mangoes.
In summer, children grew plants which originated from their chosen area that were able to grow in our climate. These were vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, or spinach which originates from Africa.
