School Council
Hello and welcome to our School council page. Each class in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 voted for 2 class representatives at the end of last academic year. They attend meetings every two weeks on Wednesday or Thursday lunchtimes. Mrs Allenson and Mrs Pinchbeck support us at our meetings.
We have done so much to make positive changes in school including earning our Eco Schools award and working with our local community to clean up the beach and park. At Christmas, we made baubles for the church Christmas tree and for 3 local care homes. We have also collected toys and games for the local Women's refuge. We enjoy organising special days such as Comic Relief, Hello Yellow day and a Big Tea day for the local hospital to raise money for different charities. We are keen to improve our playgrounds and have encouraged everyone to plant flowers and plants in their raised beds - we also won a grant from the Co-op to help us do this. We have also held lots of competitions including one to design Friendship stop signs for each playground.
We need your ideas and suggestions on what you want to do in school and ideas on how to make school a great place to be. You can do this by talking to your class councilor - we then discuss ideas at our meetings. We decide which are good ideas, discuss these with our classes and then Mrs Allenson and Mrs Thompson help us to try to help us make the ideas happen.
School values
The School Councillors, with the support of their classes, put together 6 termly values which they felt were important for our whole school community to work towards and celebrate. Each term, we introduce our value and then children are awarded special green certififcates in their Celebration assembly when they have been seen living out the value.
Each class has a poster with questions to promote discussions around the theme and how the children can be successful in showing they are promoting it.
Helping the community
The School Councillors are really keen to represent our school in the local area and help the community in any way we can. We have worked with Ebb and Flo in Cleethorpes to clean the beach and advertise the importance of not dropping litter in the sea or on the beach. We have worked with the Parish Council to litter pick in the park. We have visited 3 local Care homes so that the residents could hear our songs and we also sent decorations to the hospital to decorate the wards. We have been successful in our bid for money to improve our playgrounds and we have planted flowers and vegetables with the money we recieved. We have also donated clothes and food to the Women's Refuge and sent old clothes to the Cash for Kids appeal to raise money for disadvantaged children. We raise money for charities such as Young Minds Matter, Children in Need, Comic Relief and Grimsby hospital's charity.
School Council information boards
These are the display boards within the school. They are there so everyone can look at the minutes after each meeting or add suggestions. We put up photos of the fun days that we have organised, for example, Hello Yellow Day, Children in Need and Number Day. We really enjoy organising competitions for everyone to take part in and we award certificates and prizes. The children can also post a 'worry note' if they have any worries or concerns and Mrs Pinchbeck collects these. The date and time of the next meetings are also displayed on the board.
British Values assemblies
Our School Councillors are looking at each British Value each half term this year - we discuss how we use these values in school and share our ideas with the rest of the school. We look out for children who show examples of the values alongside our own school values and award certificates for those who we spot.
Improving our school
Our School Council are always on the look out for ways to improve our school. We have won a bid from the Coop Community Champions scheme to improve our playground and we are hoping to buy planters and bins to brighten up this area. We have purchased bird feeders and food for each outdoor area and games mats to use at playtimes and lunchtimes.
A visit from our local MP
Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, came to talk to us about democracy and his job as a Member of Parliament. We asked him lots of questions and learned a lot about how important it is to share your ideas and raise your concerns. We found out about voting, being on a committee and how Mr Vickers began his journey into politics. Our school councillors realised what an important job they have in school as the representatives for their classes, just like an MP.
Helping the community at Christmas
Our School Council wanted to spread Christmas Cheer beyond school and asked the choir to perform at two of our local Care homes. It was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all. The councillors also asked everyone to decorate Christmas baubles which were delivered to the care homes and the hospital to add some sparkle. We also donated unwanted toys and games to our local Women's Refuge before Christmas so that they could sell them and then buy new toys for children who are not as lucky as us at Christmas.
Children In Need - design your backpack T shirt
Our school council members asked everyone to design and wear a backpack t shirt for Children in Need for the theme of sharing worries. There were some amazing designs and we had some great conversations about making 'People's lives lighter' by talking to others. We also had a 'Walk and Talk' session and looked at where the money goes that we donated.
