Computing

At Waltham Leas, children belong at the centre of our computing curriculum, where they are immersed in creativity and design, exposed to a large variety of accessible software and hardware that will expand their computing knowledge and ensure every pupil feels included, valued and connected.

Our computing curriculum empowers pupils by nurturing creativity, broadening their technical vocabulary, and equipping them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to participate meaningfully, safely and respectfully in an ever growing digital world. We hope to ignite a passion for producing creative content that allows our pupils to enhance the digital future with positivity.

As children progress through our computing curriculum, they continue to grow each year—developing technical skills in a range of computer programs and applications, deepening their understanding of computer programming and data analysis, strengthening their creativity and expression, and expanding their appreciation of the vital role computing will play in their future.

We aim to provide a high-quality computing education that equips pupils to understand and grow with an ever-changing digital world. We teach the core principles of computer science alongside guiding pupils to express themselves creatively. We aim to provide all our children with the ability to use technology respectfully and safely.

At Waltham Leas, we follow the national curriculum for computing. The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

The curriculum is based around three main headings:

  •  computer science
  •  information technology
  •  digital literacy (e-safety)

Throughout the school, children are introduced to a range of technologies including: programmable robots, iPads, laptops, and Virtual Reality.
