At Waltham Leas, children belong at the centre of our music curriculum, where they are immersed in listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across diverse periods, cultures, styles and genres, ensuring every pupil feels included, valued and connected through music.

Our music curriculum empowers pupils by nurturing curiosity, broadening their musical vocabulary, building confidence through performance, and equipping them with the skills, knowledge and experiences they need to participate meaningfully in music within school and the wider community.

As children progress through our music curriculum, they continue to grow each year—developing technical skills on a range of instruments, deepening their critical understanding, strengthening their creativity and expression, and expanding their appreciation of how music conveys emotion, spirituality and meaning.

On 25 June 2022, the Department for Education and Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport published a refreshed National Plan for Music Education: the power of music to change lives. The plan sets out government’s priorities until 2030 for music education for children and young people.
