MFL

Our aim is to ensure that pupils begin to understand and communicate a new language with growing confidence, wherever possible through using it in everyday school life, giving them a sound basis for further study at Key Stage 3 and beyond. We also aim to ensure our pupils learn about different countries and their people, have an increasing awareness of other cultures whilst also celebrating the different cultures and languages spoken in our own school.

We ensure that pupils:

Begin to understand French and grow their confidence to communicate in it, using it in everyday life asking and responding to questions (weekly greetings).

Practise and reinforce what they learn so that they leave our school empowered in using and understanding a large bank of basic vocabulary and greetings.

Use their knowledge of French with growing confidence, both to understand what they hear and read, and to express themselves in different ways.

Familiarise themselves with the sounds and written form of French.

Make comparisons between languages (celebrating languages spoken in our school).

Learn about different countries and their people, increasing their awareness of other cultures and making those from other countries and backgrounds feel like they belong.

Develop a positive attitude towards the learning of foreign languages in general (making it part of our everyday life, celebrating our EAL children so they feel like they belong, rewarding with Dojos and French stickers, celebrating a ‘languages’ day).

Acquire, through all of the above, a sound basis for further study to empower their learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
